Fun Boy Three werd gevormd door Terry Hall, Lynval Golding en Neville Staples nadat ze in de zomer van 1981 The Specials hadden verlaten. De band nam een meer popgevoelige benadering aan en bracht hun debuutsingle "The Lunatics (Have Taken Over The Asylum)" uit, die in oktober 1981 de 20e plaats in de UK charts bereikte.
