Warsaw werd opgericht in de late jaren '70 door Ian Curtis (zang), Bernard Albrecht (gitaar), Peter Hook (bas) en Stephen Morris (drums). De bandnaam was geïnspireerd door "Warszawa", een compositie van David Bowie en Brian Eno. Hoewel Warsaw nooit een groot commercieel succes werd, verwierf de band in de undergroundscene al snel een cultstatus dankzij hun rauwe, hypnotiserende sound.
